Embossed Leaves Socks

This is a piccie of my current sock project. It's the Embossed Leaves Socks by Mona Schmidt. Normally I manage to complete one pair of socks per month but because I've not been well lately I've not felt like knitting much so didn't complete a pair for March. So I'm hoping to get these socks finished soon so that I have a pair finished for April! I've got the first one finished and just need to get a move on with the second sock! The yarn is Dream in Color Smooshy, which is very nice to knit with!

I've also been Geocaching on the weekends which has meant less knitting time too. We been to some great places lately and although most of them are fairly local we've seen places we've never been to before. A couple of weekends ago we did about 8 geocaches around the Bournemouth area. We had some lovely strolls along the promanade before heading into the various Chine gardens along the way.

We visited Branksome Chine Gardens, Alum Chine Gardens and Middle Chine all of which we accessed via the seafront prom.

Milton Abbas

This weekend we went further into the depths of Dorset and visited Milton Abbas . We did a geocache there which took us on a lovely 2 mile walk around the countryside. We then headed to Bulbarrow Hill to find another geocache. We found the area where the cache was hidden fairly quickly but the sandwich box was hidden inside the tree where a hole had formed and it took us ages to wiggle it out of it's hidey hole!!! At one point I thought I'd gotten my arm stuck!!!!

We then headed to Winterborne Stickland for our final cache of the day. This took us through a huge field which eventually lead to some woods called Field Grove. We walked for about a mile through the woods to find the hiding place and then it started to rain. We noticed halfway back through the woods that we had taken a wrong turning and seemed to have gone in the wrong direction. Eeek.....we were lost in the woods. Luckily the gps helped us to find our way out! It was so quiet in the woods and we didn't see a single person the whole time we were there. Mind you that's probably a good job as my imagination started to get the better of me !! You know what it's like when you hear a twig snap!
Here's a piccie of GeoTed our Geocaching buddy. He comes on all our trips and manages to get into most of the photos! He's not photo shy!!! We've now found 49 geocaches and we're now deciding where to head to for our 50th cache.

Go With The Flow Socks

Well I've been a bad blogger!!! I finished these socks at the end of February and forgot to post piccies on my blog! Most weekends I've been out Geocaching with friends which has left very little time for knitting. But this weekend was a wash out and so I decided to take some piccies and do some sock knitting. (I'll post piccies soon of my current sock wip.) Mind you I have a nasty cold which has zapped my strength so I've not managed to do as much knitting as I'd hoped.

I made a mistake after knitting the cuff pattern I forgot to knit a purl row and went straight onto knitting the leg chart! Oops! It was a nice simple pattern once I got my head around how to knit the cuff pattern. Thanks to Tiennie and Evelyn herself who helped me to figure it out :-)

The weather has been very dull and rainy this weekend and these are the best photos I can get. It's amazing how many photos you take to get a half decent one to put on the blog. Thank goodness for digital cameras!

Lovely Prizes and an Award!

When I got home from work last night I found a lovely, squishy parcel waiting for me. I had won a prize from Liz at FluffyKnitting who was having a Blogoversary Competition! I couldn't wait to open up the beautifully wrapped parcels but I made sure I took photos first! The tissue paper was so pretty it was a shame to rip it open!
I got 2 balls of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino which feels soooo soft. I also got a piece of material in a very pretty pale green pattern, some yummy Green & Blacks chocolate and also.....
these very pretty stitch markers. I'm looking forward to using them when I start my next sock project. Thank you so much Liz for all the lovely prizes :-)

Birthday Pressies, Yarn Aquisitions & WIP

It was my birthday yesterday and I received some very pretty sock yarn and I thought I would share some photos with you. I also got a lovely birthday cake from one of my friends which was very yummy. No, I haven't eaten it all .... yet. I'll be having another slice when I get home from work today. I also got some lovely none knitting pressies of perfume, bubble bath, Disney socks, slippers, hand cream, bath confetti and money. One of my friends also bought me a Geocaching.com waterbottle and accessories which will come in handy for my next trip out treasure hunting.

I also recently treated myself to some yarn and forgot to post the photos on my blog!! I got this lovely package from Socktopus which was beautifuly wrapped.
I chose 2 skeins of Dream in Color Smooshy in Beach Fog and Petal Shower. I haven't used Smooshy before but it feels very soft and smooshy!!!

Here is a piccie of my current sock that I'm working on. It's the Go With The Flow sock pattern by Evelyn Clark. I've haven't knitted anything for the last 4 days so I really need to finish this sock so that I can start a new pattern with some of my new yarn.

I also treated myself to 2 more skeins of Dani's Sunshine Yarns sock yarn. The colour above is called Hedwig and the one below is Dobby. Have you noticed the Harry Potter theme going on here!!! My new birthday yarn is also from the Harry Potter range and Dani has a whole range of Dragon coloured yarns.

Studland Beach

On Saturday I went Geocaching with friends for the first time. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game where you use a GPS receiver to help you find hidden containers which sometimes, depending on their size, will hold treasure e.g. toys, cds, and trinkets etc together with a log book you can sign. Most of the items only cost about a pound and you can take something out of the cache so long as you put something back in for the next person to find. Some of the containers are micro in size which is the smallest container you can find and can range from a 35mm film canister or recently I found a container that was only 1cm in width which had a tiny piece of paper inside to sign to say that you had found it.

You can find cache's in your local area by visiting the Geocaching.com website and searching by putting in your town. Once you find a cache you want to find you enter the co-ordinates into your GPS and then follow the arrow on your GPS to the area the cache is hidden. You have to do a bit of searching but so far we've found all of the caches we have been looking for although some were quite hard to find. There are lots of caches in my area and loads all over the country. You can also search for caches if you are on holiday as they are hidden all over the world!!

My GPS and Travel Bug

Here is a picture of my GPS next to a Travel Bug we found in one of the caches. A Travel Bug has a trackable dog tag attached to it. You don't keep the Travel Bugs as the idea is to move it from cache to cache so that it can travel the world. The Travel Bug we found is an old spark plug from a volvo car and the owner wants it to ultimately travel to Sweden where the car was made.

Cache box and contents

Here's a picture of one of the cache's we found on Saturday. This box had a great selection of items which included a little Forever Friends teddy, a pair of socks, a dvd, face mask, whoopie cushion, a blank DVD-RW, a set of highlighter pens etc. We took the little teddy who will now go on our Geocaching travels with us. We left a necklace and a fridge magnet bottle opener as a swop for someone else to take in the future.

Old Harry Rocks

One of the caches we found was near Old Harry Rocks in Studland. The weather was gorgeous....very warm and sunny, there were lots of visitors enjoying the spectacular views and munching on their sarnies.

The Globe

On Sunday we went to The Globe in Swanage to find a hidden cache. The Globe is a 40 ton limestone representation of the world, three metres in diameter, engraved with a 1880's world map. Again the weather was warm and sunny. My littlest neice is in the photo above and all the kids had a great time treasure hunting and following the arrow on the GPS.

This is the Obelisk on the Purbeck hills between Swanage and Corfe Castle. We had quite a walk to get to this cache but the views were breathtaking and well worth the hike up the hill.

This is a really fun sport/hobby for the whole family to enjoy. Why not have a go yourself???

These are my first finished pair of socks for 2008! In a previous post I mentioned that I wasn't too keen on the way the yarn was knitting up (I don't like the pooling of the purple and blue) but I am pleased with the finished socks and I think they have grown on me. I did start knitting these socks with a 60st cast on but they seemed really tight and I had made a mistake in the pattern so I frogged them and cast on 72sts (the next size in the book). They fit a treat so I'm happy the frogging was worth it. I really like the pattern so I may knit it again but there are lots of interesting patterns in More Sensational Knitted Socks that I may have to knit first ;-)

Yummy Sunshine Yarns

I haven't treated myself to any yarn for ages and I've really missed getting yummy yarn packages arriving in the post. I find it really gives me a happy boost when I get yarn! Anyone else feel the same way? I placed an order with Dani at Sunshine Yarns on Etsy for these two skeins. The problem with looking at Dani's yarns is that she has the most amazing colours and it's soooo hard to choose which ones you want to buy. Of course, if I were a millionaire I wouldn't have the difficult choice of only choosing two colours at a time ..... I'd buy them all ;-) OK, silliness over!

I ended up choosing Dumbledore and Seacoast both of which are Twist (100% Superwash wool with a tight spin). Dani has a new website where you can see her lovely yarns. There is also a photo gallery where you can see lots of lovely socks that have been knitted in Sunshine Yarn's yarn.

Crosshatch Lace Socks - WIP

Here's a rather bad photo of my current sock project. It's the Crosshatch Lace pattern from the fabulous book More Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch! I think this may be the first pattern I've knitted from this book and also the first time I've knitted with Koigu yarn. The yarn feels lovely but I'm a bit disappointed with the way the colours are appearing on the sock. They looked so pretty when they were in their skeins. I've been trying to take a photo of my sock progress all week and I've taken lots of photos but practically all of them are blurred and dark. This is the best of a bad bunch. I took this outside of work propped up on the window sill! Hopefully I'll finish these socks over the weekend and will post another finished photo then.

Purple Socks and Pressies

A rather belated Happy New Year to everyone!! I don't know where the time has gone but I thought I'd best write something on my blog in case you thought I'd disappeared !! These socks were the last pair I finished for 2007! I did post a piccie on the Crafty Yarns n' Threads forum but forgot to post a piccie on my blog!

I also got some lovely knitty Christmas presents for various people. I got some more sock blockers in size medium this time. I already have a set in small but I was finding them too small for the socks I was knitting, so I asked for a set of medium for Christmas. Unfortunately, my new set are very rough on the edges and when I put some socks on them I thought they were scratching the yarn too much. I think I'll have to do some sanding, if that's possible on plastic sock blockers!?

I also got some lovely Cherry Tree Hill yarn in Natural. I already have an idea of which socks I want to knit with this yarn. I also got two balls of Crystal Palace Panda Cotton. The colour is Painted Iris. Although they say 50g on the ball band the balls are just soooo small. I've seen lots of socks knitted in Panda cotton so I'm guessing it's not a problem. Fingers crossed! One of my friends bought my a lovely set of blue stitch markers which will come in very handy too.

My friend in America sent my this Knitting desk calendar. It has a pattern for each day of the year.
Here's a piccie of this weekend's pattern for an Ugly Scarf! It does look rather ugly too :-) I haven't had a look through all the patterns yet but I'm hoping there will be some sock patterns coming up. Not that I don't have a big list of sock patterns that I want to knit already!!

Victorian Lace Socks Finished

I finished these socks last week but I didn't have time for blogging as I had the week off work and spent most of it Christmas shopping!! These are the Victorian Lace socks and the pattern is exclusive to members of the Six Sox Knit-a-long group. You can get the pattern by joining the group by going to Yahoo Groups. They have lots of fab sock patterns. I didn't do the short row toe and the 3 needle bind off that the pattern uses but instead did my own usual toe shaping and kitchenered the toe. The pattern had a funny stitch in it called a mini-melon. This was a first for me but it was quite easy to do as long as the stitches weren't too tight. I bought the yarn from an online store in Germany as I just couldn't find anyone in the UK that sold Regia Stretch. It was my first time knitting with Regia yarn and I really liked the way it felt. I must buy more for my stash !!!!

Current Sock Projects

Here are a couple of photos of my current sock projects. The photos are not the best quality as I had to taken them in the evening and they usually come out much better if I take them in the daylight. The purple sock is just a basic plain sock pattern knitted with Opal Magic and the bottom photo is the Victorian Lace sock pattern knitted with Regia Stretch. It's the first time I've used Regia Stretch yarn and I liked the thickness of the yarn and they are knitting up nicely.

Norweger Ringel Socks

I finished these socks at the beginning of November but I forgot to post about them. I actually started these in July but moved on to other sock patterns and these were rather neglected! It has been really cold here lately and so I needed some nice thick socks to wear in bed!!!! As this yarn was slightly thicker than normal sock yarn I thought they'd make a nice pair of bed socks. I fished them out of the washing basket this morning when I remembered I hadn't taken a photograph of them. They are looking a little fluffy already but I have worn them a few times already. They are nice and comfy and warm so ideal for keeping my cold feet warm. My Mum bought the yarn for me in Austria so I don't know if it's available over here in the UK.

Mini Monkeys Finished

I finished my Mini Monkey socks the other day. I had spotted some Mini Monkeys over on January One's Blog and thought they looked so pretty. The pattern has been slightly modified and has a little picot cuff and a shorter leg length. The foot is longer than the socks I usually knit for myself and I hope it's the right size for my friend. I wanted to knit her a pair of socks for her Christmas pressie and decided on this pattern. I hope she likes them.

I don't seem to have posted anything for ages!!! I recently got my invite to Ravelry and have been spending a lot of time on there adding friends, books, stash and projects. I also seem to spend a LOT of time looking at other peoples patterns and projects! Too much time!!!!

Cowgirl Slipper Socks ~ Finished!

These are my finished Cowgirl Slipper Socks. The pattern was originally designed to use worsted weight yarn and 4.5mm needles. Piglottie modified the pattern to use 2.75mm needles and normal sock yarn. It's a nice easy pattern and very quick to knit. I did 5 pattern repeats for this version and I chose a heel pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks. If you would like to have a go at these socks check out Piglottie's blog for details.

I liked the pattern so much I decided to knit another pair straight away. I love the way they fit and I think they make lovely little ankle socks, so I had a rummage in my sock yarn stash and pulled out some more Colinette Jitterbug yarn. This time in a bright pink!! I decided to knit 6 pattern repeats for this pair and did the same heel design.

The only thing I'm disappointed with on this pair is the pooling of the colours when I was knitting the gusset shaping. I seem to have one sock with mostly pink and the other with mostly pale lilac. I also noticed that one sock has thicker lilac stripes than the other. They were knitted with one ball of yarn but they seem to look different. Oh well never mind. I really like the thickness of the Jitterbug yarn and wouldn't mind getting some more for my stash.....

Ballard Down Walk

I finally got to go out for a walk. YAY!!! I haven't been walking for a few months now and it was starting to get me down. We walked from Swanage up to Ballard Down and around and back onto the beach. We started off at 9.30am on Saturday morning and as you can see from the photo above it was a rather gloomy start to the day. Mind you it was very warm and humid which isn't so good when you're struggling up the hills!

Red Berries

It was nice to see a bit of red colour on our walk. Anyone know what these berries are called??

This photo shows our progress up the cliff path with a view back to Swanage Bay and town. It was nice to have an excuse to take a photo or two whilst I caught my breath !!

Hey look it's me and my rucksack heading down the steep steps. We stopped off for some nibbles before we tackled these steps.

Having walked all the way up to the cliff top at Ballard Down we did a circular walk and decided to walk back along the beach which was still pretty deserted.

It was a lovely walk and it only rained a little bit. My toes are hurting now because my walking boots are too small for me and my toes slip to the front when I'm walking down hill. Must get some new ones soon.

New sock in progress...

This is the sock I'm working on at the moment. It's the Cowgirl Slipper Sock pattern from Interweave Knits but it's been modified by the lovely Piglottie. Details are on her blog if you want to knit her version. I think the original pattern uses thicker yarn and bigger needles. The yarn I'm using is Colinette Jitterbug in the Marble colourway. This is a lovely yarn to knit with and is thicker than say Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock yarn.

I'm also still working on my plain socks in the yarn my Mum bought me. I'm using my Addi lace circs but I've had to stop knitting that sock for a while as I've noticed I keep poking my index fingers whilst knitting and these needles are soooo pointy that my index finger on each hand is very sore and has little holes in them where I keep poking the needles into them. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me??!!

Bordello Socks

Well, I can't quite believe I haven't blogged for nearly a month!!!! Where has the time gone??! I finished these socks a few days ago but have only just found the time to blog about them. The pattern is the Bordello sock and comes free when you buy Fleece Artist Sea Wool. It's printed on the ball band.

The close up photo shows the colours better than the other photo. It's very similar to the Jaywalker pattern and very easy to memorise. The yarn is thicker than normal sock yarn and you use 3mm needles to knit it. I found the finished sock to be a bit on the snug side but I can get them on so that's ok. The yarn is lovely and soft and knits up really nicely. I have another ball of Sea Wool in my stash and will probably knit another pair of Bordello socks but with a shorter leg length.

'Vog On Socks Finished

My knitting has slowed down recently with the blame being put squarely on my Nintendo Wii. I bought a couple of new games for it recently and have been playing Big Brain Academy and Mario Party 8 when I really should be finishing off socks!!! I did manage to finish my first pair of 'Vog On socks. They have a picot cast on which was new to me and the pattern was very easy and it would have been a quick knit ..... if not for the Wii!!!!!

Waving Lace Socks Finished

Here are a couple of photos of my finished Waving Lace Socks. I really enjoyed knitting these socks as the pattern was designed by Evelyn A Clark and I love how she writes her patterns. Apart from being gorgeous designs the patterns are written so well that you don't get confused and can follow them really easily.

I'm eager to try another pattern from Favorite Socks but I have two socks on the go at the moment and also have some other patterns lined up. I'm not too sure when I'll get a chance to knit another pattern from the book but hopefully it won't be too long.

My new black kitchen flooring comes in handy for taking photos of my socks as they show up really well. I would have posted a picture of my new kitchen before now but the kitchen fitters fitted my kitchen over the week commencing 25th June but they haven't finished yet as there are a few bits that still need to be fitted that weren't delivered on time. Do you think I can get them back to finish!!??!! NO!!! They are too busy fitting other kitchens now to come and finish mine. I'm not too happy about this, I can tell you but it's not really their fault. I blame the kitchen company. I wonder if I should name and shame them but I'd probably get into trouble!

Sock W.I.P.s

I thought I'd better post some pics of my current works in progress. The top photo shows just a plain sock that I'm knitting on my new Addi Lace 3mm Circs. The yarn was a present from my Mum who went to visit her family in Austria. This was the only sock yarn she could find. It's not exactly my colour choice but they'll make nice warm socks for the winter. I wanted to knit a plain pair so that I would have something easy to knit whilst watching t.v. that I didn't have to concentrate on too much.
I'm also knitting the Vog On pattern from Knitty. FatCat (from the Crafty Threads n Yarns forum) has knitted this pattern twice and they looked so pretty that I ended up buying a skein of Lorna's Laces Shepherd sock yarn in the exact colour that FatCat had used for her first pair. The colour is Layette and it was on special offer at Get Knitted. I'm just hoping I can squeeze a pair out of one skein!

Chrissy to the Rescue.....

Here are a couple of photos of the wonderful parcel I received in the post this week. It's some more Gryffindor coloured yarn from Chrissy at Brightdyes. I sent her my Horcrux socks (the ones that don't fit me) and she will be using them in her displays at the shows she goes to. I think I may just knit myself a plain pair of socks with this yarn. Must finish my other socks first though. I finished ready Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this week which I really enjoyed. Now I've just got to find the time to get to the cinema to see the new film.

Waving Lace Socks

I'm currently knitting the Waving Lace Pattern from the fabulous book Favorite Socks. I love the patterns in this book and this is my first pattern knitted from it. I chose this pattern to knit first as it was designed by Evelyn A Clark. I love her patterns as she writes them so well that they are easy to understand and they look beautiful. I'm knitting this pair with Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn in Powder Blue (I think). Will have to check the ball band when I've finished the pair. They also feature on the front cover of the book too. You have a choice of knitting a standard rib at the top of the sock or a scalloped edging. I chose to knit the scalloped edging as it looks so pretty :-)
